Our History
Hukyu (meaning "everlasting") Bonsai Society was founded by Mr.
Phillip Lin, the first president of Hukyu, along with charter
members Leota Johnson and Bill Henderson, as Suncoast Bonsai Society
in 1965, becoming Gulf Coast in 1969, and then, in search of a more
unique name, Hukyu. In 1971 Mr. Lin, originator of the idea of
Bonsai Societies of Florida, contacted the seven or eight bonsai
societies, suggesting we should have a Florida Bonsai Newsletter,
and through the newsletter, leaders of the Florida bonsai clubs
arranged to meet in Orlando to organize the Bonsai Societies of
Florida. Some of our Hukyu members known at the state, national, and
international level have been Phillip Lin, Jorge Lucero, Rowena
Berteau, Marian Borchers, Gay Laubsch, Ely Johnson, Cliff Pottberg,
and Felton Jones.
